I havent been able to put on my development work of my posters as my computer is being very difficult and for some reason photobusket wont host the jpegs of my posters on it.....

So im going to explain them, they are simple posters keeping in the theme of the look of the blog with plenty of pictures of development and and the machine in making.
There is not a great deal of writing to do with the radio machine as if these psoters are on a slide then they wont be seen for a long time so the information wont be read at once if there is too much on it. Or have i got the wrong idea of how its being displayed????

There is some writing which is basic and says what i believe radio machine has done and will do...

Ok, so I have finished my machine . . . . . a little slow I know. I have made same changes though. I was using pieces of wire to scrape but the friction was too great and they ended up rolling with the tin. So instead i have used springs which make a more annoying noise and work much better. I also added a bar along the bottom for weight which should balance the tin.

In a nice turn of fate, the area around my mates place is having a hard rubbish collection atm. So last night, walking home from the station (after the best gig ever!) I went looking for a suitable aerial. And I found one! It's an old telecom phone, which is perfect because: a) its ugly! and b) it is basically just a really long wire. I'll bring some fishing wire on tuesday and we can hang the reciever from the roof or something. See ya

Those of you that would like to meet up on monday - please let me know in the comments section of this post so we can work out a time.
Otherwise we can all meet on tuesday morning for final assembly on TUESDAY MORNING AT 10AM.

hi everyone !
I looked around 87 and the workshop for my parts today... but they werent around. I read the post from Liam below and understand that we can pick them up tomorow.
My machine in particular needs some fine tuning and it's pretty hard for me to build the rest without me essential laser cut section, so although I can easily work out where my machine is going to fit into the table, tomorow, it surely wont be ready for peer reveiw!
I'm sure there are a bunch of people who need parts, who are in this boat and would rather have some chilled out fine tuning time over the weekend to get their machines finished.
I interpreted liam hinting at this in an eariler post.
So ,
Is it okay if people who need special time to assemble their machines/parts , to all be in the one assessment group with eachother, who can then assess on Monday???

I'm hoping that I'm not the only one in this situation!

In other news, I can still be very productive tomorow, I'll set up all the microphones that I can, hook them up to the mixer and hook up the transmitter to the aerial!
Or whatever is possible with the electronics. Also I'll be happy to help the table guys fit together the gears that I drew up for them !

I hope this post works, becuase none of my other ones have. Anyway, can i just say that i hate the fact that the poster has to be in digital format. It puts me at a disadvantage becuase
A: i'm not good with photoshop and illustrator
B: because i don't have a digital camera.

Surely if one were to do it by hand, it would be a truer expression of a persons feelings as opposed to a few funky pen tool shapes, photos and text.

Hi all,
Ok so thursday is tomorrow and the laser cut parts should be delivered.
We can still all meet and go through assessment / reveiw on friday morning. and generally get things moving on assembly.
Some may need more time to finish their individual machines - and there will be work in getting all of the posters and the tables done - so we can also meet on Monday to finish it off.
Now it is full steam ahead on radio machine.
Oh and the other thing is that the exhibition will be up for two days (tuesday (opening), wednesday, and thursday pack up). (this is if we do it on level four).
If it is level five - we can leave it for a while - but it will be mobile so it shouldn't be too hard to move it around.

Scavegers do not cringe in fear, I have found a large supply of copper plate for both group and my personal usage, so that can go off the list. As for the brush, I can make do with my own copper, unless something is found.

Electrical: Do I need to source my own wire for the mics? If so is there any particular type best suited? I can also bring a soldering iron kit if needed.

Update for the Table

The mechanical dep. met today and build the table extensions for the table. As for the problem, we made an excutive decision, making the table tops 950mm agianst 1250mm quoted last time we met. This may cause some disagreements, but we feel with the two platforms there will be enough room for everyone. But there is a plan B for extenions on the extension that can be done in the event of trouble. This will basically include extension mounted on large hinges with supporting struts.

Question to Liam, if the parts come on thurs, can the mechanical dep. work on thursday afternoon and friday morning to build the table??? Just the stuffing around time has to be factored into building the table.

Hi Everyone,
Ok so the laser cutting will take longer than I had hoped - there have been problems with some of the parts (which are now fixed). However, the delay has some consequences:
1. The parts will not be available until thursday.
2. The job has had to be put in as a priority (this has a cost implication)

So Between Now and thursday work on your posters, collectinag all the bits an pieces that need to be collected.
You can collect you machine parts from me on thurday (mid day on wards)
Make all of the parts of your machine that are not going to be laser cut (dowel etc).
Have a look at the drawings that you gave to me and review all of the things that you will need to do to make the machine (ie: what holes you will need to drill etc)
On Friday we had arranged to meet and assemble the machine - we can still do this but not all machines will be ready so we will have to finish assembly on Monday (this should give you some time to finish making your machines)
On friday Morning we can still do assessment and start assembly. Any of you that have your machines ready bring them along so that you can get your assembly to the table done.

So you must be at uni at 10 am sharp.

Problem

Just a problem I noticed this morning when contructing the table extenions. The Mech Dep. had quoted a table length of 1400mm by 1250mm, unfortunely the lift width (damn those rubber seals) means the width max. can only be 950mm. I have quoted this to Phil as of 12.30pm Monday for Paul to cut. The problem is whether the backing plate and gears can still be used? Shannon and Liam could you please inform me, because this could arise into major problem.

On a lighter note, like Kate I have started on my poster, just wondering how the scanvenger team are going with me wish list?

Ok scavengers, I need to touch base. For the antenna, I was thinking of using an old TV style one, cos they are definately ugly! Also, if we had a few, we could make a tower similar to those big high voltage power transmission pylons.

I spoke to Leon last class and he said he would have a look. Anyway, if you do find one, could you please bring it on friday so I can rig it up over the weekend. But if your not going to get a chance, can you let me know and I'll go to the local tip and see what I can find.

Laser cutting details

Ok so after spending large amounts of time redrawing your drawings - the cutting is in process. I am hoping to have the parts back on tuesday (which does not give you long to assemble everything for friday). So here is what you should do:
1. Start making all of the bits that are not going to be cut (eg. dowell axles)
2. Start making all of the bits that you don't need laser cut.
3. Have everything ready so that when you get your parts you can just stick it all together.
4. Finish your posters - and use drawings of your work in progress as opposed to images of the finished thing.
5. Get your team activities sorted.
6. await further instructions

Ok so I have just finished repairing your part drawings so that they can be cut. I am not even going to get into why they have taken so long - but we need to have a chat about cad /solidworks next semester.
Ok so I have followed everyones draings/instructions as they we given. I have also thrown in a few extras of parts where there was room.

So, after much thought (ie: vaugely thinking about it whilst watching tv instead of opening illustrator!) I have decided on a name. My machine shall henceforth be known as:

the "All Natural Noise in a Can" machine.

The noise is produced by leaves blowing around inside a tin can. A gentle sound, but an ugly concept, given the enclosed and artificial environment the possibly beautiful leaves have been placed in.

attention all noise makers,

say hello to my very own noise machine, i call it "THE COW ANNOYER", its purpose, to constantly annoy cows or people who are tuned into the station or people tuned into the station who own cows, who knows...

ok back to the real world...my noise machine consists of a cowbell which is mounted onto a vertical rod, that is then mounted onto a board. a drum stick comes off the rotating axel, which is then SUPPOSEDLY attached to a spring..which is where u guys hopefulli can help me...my plan is to have the stick attached to the rotating axel and therfor when it passes the cowbell its able to flex and blow past it...however im not sure how to incoporate the spring into it.

Make sure you post before about midday on Sunday, cos I'll buy them on Monday morning before class. Just bring the money with you and we'll sort it out then.

My New Redesigned Machine !!!!!!

Hey guys,

although you have already seen my new machine I thought I better document it. So originally I was going to use a timber cylinder but have decided to use a dog food can (much easier). But for the purposes of making a prototype I used drink bottles. Originally the wire was pretty thin and I put the orange plastic tube around it to thread the wire brissles. But the plastic kept twisting around the wire so I swapped it for a thick coat hanger and made loops in the metal to hold the brissles. I know how horrible the model looks but I think once its made out of durable materials it should be sweet. The black wheel below is the shape that the ends of my tin will have on them. That's it from me for now . . . .

Hi Everyone, These are the pictures of the NOISE MACHINE that i made out of cardboard..

It was sort of modified abit as the skewer which will be connected to the gear and rotating are now attached to 2 poles on both ends.. i did that because i didnt think the skewer would be stable if it's only a side of it which is attached to the pole.. I havent sticked either the foil or the sand paper there.. so it looks like its not gonna produce any noise..

Ohhh! About the ugly flyers, what about we write it on cardboard? What i mean is partly ripped cardboard because i realized that will look ugly too.. but i think it will be a bit hard to write on it but it's just an idea.. anyway this is what i mean.. what do u guys think?

My " nice and neat" dimensions...

Time to laser cut *jump for joy*
If you look at the prototype you can see that they are not all joined [the axels,etc] that is because the cardboard too thin to use rubber bands, but basically largest one is joined to the shaft with a belt, it moves another wheel that has '8 teeth' [8/15 = angle of my birthdate] that moves the other wheel that then moves the wheel that is joined to the big wheel that moves the small stick that moves the big stick that moves the rice and the rice hits the wood which then sends the sound through the mics in the bags and then creates the sound... hahaha

And the things we could hang around are 'radio' stuff like old headphones, parts of speakers, etc [ scavengers please look out for these and bring them^_^!] -this photograph really blurry and I forgot to rotate it -hehe-

light bulbs without umbrella

Oh yeah!!! Finally!!!This's my newest design. You can see there's a big big change-"no umbrella frame" cause i found out if using the previous one( the light bulbs hung on the umbrella together), bulbs kept moving even if the frame stoped. Therefore, Liam suggested me to use another way which is to put each bulb in different postitions without the frame so they couldn't hit each other when they stop moving. Then i changed Liam's idea a little bit and it became this one.
i hung bulbs in the same length of rectangle cardborads but make them in different highs. When the geer hits the bottom of those cardborads, they will rise in the same high and bulbs will hit together to make sound.
BUT there are some little problems:
1. bulbs are too heavy so it's a little bit hard for cardboard to support them.
2. bulbs have to be very close for hitting each other so i put the rectangle cardborads closer but it will make them rise difficultlly.
Anyway, it still can work. So happy I've finished it.
Please give me some suggestions. THX!!!!!!

Hey all, this is my latest design for my sound machine. I have recorded the sound for the tone def people but no promises wheather i can get it to work or not. This blog stuff is confusing. Hope it is annoying enough. The machine works a treat and is full of quality joinery. Any thoughts would be great???

Here is the sketch of idea of my NOISE machine.. If no one has seen it before.. This is the developed version of my machine as it was supposed to be swinging before. How it works is the long piece of timber (which is holding the block with foils stuck on each side of it) will be rotating 360 degrees in a certain speed.. I think it would be a slow speed.. It will be moved by the gear which will be connected to the table. I will stick sand paper on the slope and this slope is going to be used to produce the ANNOYING squeaking noise when the foil touches it.. haha no one liked it so far.. I think that's about it. what do u guys think?? :)

It was too symmetrical.

So I made the board where the rice hits go on a slant [I could then have two varied rice-smashing-sounds... as one hits closer to the wood than the other].

hrmm, ok i dont like this whole under the table stuff if thats what is still happening? it's too neat looking from above, has anyone actually found this table we are ment to be cutting up, because I sure haven't.

anyway i hope i can post my ugly pic of my ugly thing. No illustrator at home at the moment and photoshop was doing my head in with all its layers, so i just drew free hand in it, making sure all the colours did NOT co-ordinate.

the wheel spins, and hit glasses of water... or waste (brown water worked for me at the time)..... DING DING DING u get sounds...

now for that cradboard model...

oh and everyone happy with biscuits for monday? well you better be otherwise starve! then we could use ur rib cage bones to make some sick sick sound...............................

here's my cardboard prototype - to scale and working. I would've made a video but... being techno-illiterate and all that...

Having problems making each part in solidworks, but I really want my parts laser cut. What to do??

LIAM: can I possibly draw my parts to scale in illustrator or something?? Solidworks does my head in.

Also, have decided to swap the skewers for some strips of metal I found lying on the side of the road - much better (UGLY) sound. Will show everyone on Monday. Doesn't affect my machine at all.

The wheel will be driven by the medium speed, or fast speed drive shaft (from the side) will this work, mechanics??

Table Design

Talking to the fellow groupies today, it is still clear that there is a division between the two table designs.
Shannon (he's my example, I don't speack directly for him) feels that belts are the wrong path to follow, suggesting that the correct size of belt will be hard to find for individual machines. He favours the shafts running on top with gear drives. This sound good, just I think organising 20 + people to give their gear specs to shannon might over load him.

As for me, i'm not bothered which design, they will both do the job with some fitting, i just want to start building it. So speak up now or shut up later.

Hi people, partically felow mechanics.

Above is some suggested dimensions for the bench. I'm not quite sure how big we want everything else so i figured, unless someone can determine the size, that me, stu and matty and can just figure it out 2moro morning.

Of course with this design, the machine will go on top with lots of cut outs for your machine, which will be cut out once the machines are made properly.

Any feedback would be awesome.

As for the bench for the machines, having thought about it as well as talking about it for a while, i've changed my idea a bit. I thought my first design, without the primary gear, leaving the medium gear to be directly driven, would be better.
My reasoning is in the design taste. It has to be 'ugly', thus my ugly would by a cluttered, messy machine that somehow works. To me the shafts running under the table hides the mechanicalism of the piece. Where as the shafts running on top of the table give a naked, raw and cluttered effect which I think is a version of ugly. Why, because to me beautiful (stretching for a better word to juxtapose ugly) is a simple clean design that works perfectly(I don't know why, properly told this by "celebrity" designers). The design is not a clean crisp image, it is cluttered, messy and has no misgivings about beautification of its exterior. Also I haven't decided on gear sizes, since I don't know how much space between the shafts will be needed.....answers please.

Secondly in the realistic world, Sarah raised a good point that here machine will have to be under the table if the shafts are to simply work. If the shafts are on top, then here ingenious desing is shown off to a greater extent. Also are we trying to show off the wiring? Is that an ugly feature? Should Shannon, ro and abs take inspiration from the typical Italian "Spagetti" wiring system? Or should it be hide? Answers Please......

my machine

hi all,

Well here's my machine made out of cardboard mainly at the moment just to make sure it works, which im please to say, it does. There is also a pic of my old design so you can see how much it has changed, espically the fact that it dosn't have a spring anymore, but instead works off see-saw type of idea.

To explain how it works; the rotating wheel has 2 gears on it which grab the edge of the cylinder. It then lifts it up in the air, making the marbles inside the cylinder roll down. Once the gear goes past how much it can lift, the cylinder moves back down and so do the marbles. Repeating the process on the other gear and then it has 1/3 of a gap where no noise is made.

About the flyer...
I reckon if we are going to make an 'ugly' radio machine.. then we should make a pretty 'ugly' looking flyer too [as in not just plain a4/a5/whichever paper]... maybe use like.. glad-wrap or something and scrawl all over it with marker and put it on the wall [and make it HUUUUUUGE]. Or even hang things in areas where people will find it irritating [like in doorways] - although hang things that will possibly not harm people [sharp things perhaps o_O] ... though not sure maybe they will not like or allow things to be blocking passageways [although that will be the main point of it =D] anyway yeh tell me what you think.

Or we could record our voices onto a cd promoting the radio machine and have it playing constantly somewhere with alot of people =] ... of course not just talk it through [or else it may sound like any other announcement], have it distorted yet still clear enough to understand what we're saying.

Ok the questions to Liam:
Please clarify:

1. "Organise Live Web Cast of Radio Machine in action"... does this mean you want us to have something wireless set up [webcam] shooting the radio machine and broadcast over the internet so people can view it whenever they like?

2. "Put together a schematic/system diagram of the how and why of Radio Machine" - not sure how this works, rephrase please =) ?

3. "Plan Innagural Broadcast/Grand Opening"... is this planning the ENTIRE event as in what will happen, who will do what, what refreshments/food are available [beer, beer and more beer most likely haha... oh, and those chips!]... or like... actually I think I have just answered my own question... but yeh, if you can add a bit more then please ^^ thanks

Hey all,

Well this is the design i came up with incorporating Liam's new ideas. I'm not sure if it's exactly wat he had in mind, but anyway.

To be honest, i think the original idea with all the shafts and machines on the top would be alot easier to muster and make work. Plus it would be more ugly that way i think? Wat do u reakon ppl?

Looking at the plan comments everyone seems to be happy???? If not tell me tommorow (Wednesday) or thrusday at the latest.
As for Rohan's comments...his plan is an option, its just i'm worried that if we do that (delete primary gear and replace it with the medium speed gear shaft) we will lose space between the primary gear (connected to the crank) and the fast gear (it is half the size so both shafts will be close).
As for the platform, Liam thought that the space underneath could be used to hide the electrics and an other item, just to uncluter it a bit.
Building wise, i've spoken to Phil (from the workshop of course) and indicated we will build the basic bones of it on friday morning. This leaves little time to redesign, so as i've said before, any probs speak to the mechanical department.
This is a shout out to Shannon, Caid guru, can I put you in charge for the gear creation in solidworks??? If not I'll speak to nasser tommorrow.
liam, we start holidays in three weeks right? Thus how much will the project eat into the holidays...just want to know the solid plans.

WORKING GROUPS TASKS

Ok so you have been wondering why we had to break up into small working groups - well heres why:

Activities are ramping up and there is an enourmous ammount to do to make this project the sort of project that design students all over the world would kill to be a part of. So I know it seems like hard work - but hard work is fun work and you have all almost sorted out your individual machines - so it is time to activate the groups..........

ACOUSTIC ENGINEERS (Kyne and Jason)
You have to do some A3 (portrait) PDF posters of the radio Machine System.
You have to include diagrams of:
1. the radio broadcast system
2. the machine and how it works
3. the acoustic "horror" and a desdription of each machine / person and thier noise.
4. it needs to have a way of mapping / communicating the "annoyance /cringe rating" of each instrument.
Anti Musicians (Kate and Sarah)
You need to design and write (A3 PDF Posters) of the following
1. A radio machine cover poster
2. A radio manifesto (ie, What it seeks to do, the importantance of anti-music etc)
3.A brief history of Pirate Radio - and why it is such an important use of technology / moment in our technological history.

You also need to design and sort out labels for the exhibition:
these will have : students full name, the name of their machine, and a breif description of how it creates noise.
these will be mounted next to each machine in the exhibition.
mechanical engineers (Matt, Steve, Stuart, Nina)
You have to have the table and drive system designed and ready to be built asap - you also have to build it.
You also need to design and build an antena so that we can throw our broadcast into space - (it has to be less that 2600mm high)
Electrical Engineers (Shannon, Abs and Rohan)
You have done a lot already - but you will need to wire up the machine once it is built, help fabricate the $3,00 micrphones etc and make sure that all of the broadcast system is working beautifully.
ODD JOBS (Louisa, Charles, KEnji and Georgie)
You have to:
cater food and refreshments for the next two sessions and for the installation.
you have to start publicising the Radiomachine (flyers)
You have to help anyother team when asked
You have to Plan the Innagural Broadcast / Grand Opening
And You have to document all of the activities with photos / daily updates etc.
Scavengers / Installation (Leon, Aerin, Jane and Oliver)
You have to find useful materials
Old Fm Radios that we can use for the opening

PROJECT REFLECTION

In Week 15 you are to submit a reflection on your learning within this project. It is to be done as a poster, which will form a durable record of the radio machine collective and all that it has achieved.
This is what it is to include:

2. What this learning might mean for future design projects.
3. how you have managed working with others
4. what you see as being your most significant achievement.
5. It has to be illustrated with photographs of your work - and one image of your face.
6. It has to have your full name
7. It has to talk about your developing idea of "design"

This has to be done as ONE A3 (portrait) poster in PDF Format.
The poster will be printed out and used in the exhibition / grand opening broadcast.

ok guys,

this is a sketch of my machine. The principle is balancing the weights (attached to the axle) and also my machine is under the drive shaft causing tension. MECHANICAL ENGINEERS . . . . please tell me this design might work . . . . . The only thing is i'm going to need about 30 cut outs of the circular pieces to make up the cylinder (200mm wide) given the timber only has a 6mm width. feed back plz . . . .

(week 12 - next Monday) Have;
1. fully designed and resolved your machine for production.
2.You must have CAD drawings with dimensions of every part you need to produce (this is for those that are having things laser cut and those that want to make it in the workshop - no excuses.
3. You need to have built a working prototype and posted all of the design work up to date on the blog.
(week 13 - last class)
You need to start assembling your machine and document the process and your thoughts on the blog.
(week 14) Your machine must be finished and we will assemble the larger radio machine.
(week 15) Your "Project Reflection" is due (see post on that) and we will have the grand opening.

some of you might be curious about building your own microphone... well you can i suppose, but it would be much easier ( and easier to integrate from an electronics standpoint) if you just bought one of of these for only $2.65

there also another part that some of you might have to buy called a potentiometer ( a variable resistor) , which is essenitally a volume control, but i wont know who will need it / if we need them at all until things are really making sounds. in any case they dont go for any more than about 40 or 50 cents, so chances are you wont have to dance for money or anything drastic. ( but if you feel the need, im not gonna stop you....)

a) We only have two more sessions together
b) You are all being too anxious and cautious (aside from a few that are working very hard) and are not showing that you are even close to making the aspirational grade that you are working toward.
c) The radio machine must work
d) the project must be fully documented.

So here is what YOU must do for next Monday:

Individually you have to:
build a working mock up / prototype of your machine 1:1 scale.
Make sure that it works everytime
Make it look "ugly"- but very well thought through
Draw it up in CAD / solid works (all parts separately) and email it to me as a DXF / slpt file
Post all of your work as you do it on the blog
Ask eachother for feedback
Give feedback
Have every detail worked out and ready for production

Mechanical Engineers:
You have to have the table / engine designed (I have a better idea - and will post it tomorrow)
You have to make a date to fabricate it as a team

Electrical engineers:
Shannon you are incharge of the transmitter etc

You have a lot to do:

5. any materials that you think will come in handy

Anti musicians:
You need to keep it all noisy, annoying, visually uncomfortable - you are the "artistic directors" - be demanding, make suggestions - nake sure that everyone is doing their part of the deal.
